There are many secrets to building and maintaining good relationships. However the most commonly expressed problems are:

We don’t spend enough time together
We are not kind enough to each other
We do not listen to each other

Finding solutions in each of these areas is hugely important; I will discuss each of these in more detail in subsequent posts.

However the real key to good relationships is learning the art of active communication. When people understand the use of active communication everything else almost always falls naturally into place.

The difference between active communication and passive communication is that in active communication you are taking responsibility, being proactive and solution-focused. On the other hand passive communication is vague, defensive and involves laying the blame.

At the heart of a good relationship is a caring and loving friendship, as well as whatever is unique to that individual couple. The art of active communication is easily learnt with a little effort. It is a core part of the work that we do with individuals and couples, which not only improves the relationship but also benefits other areas of our clients lives.
