What are the symptoms of a phobia?
There are a whole range of physical symptoms that you might experience when you are faced with the situation that triggers your phobia. The symptoms are produced when your body flight or fight response is activated. This causes your body to produce adrenalin and other powerful stress hormones.
If your body produces a lot of the fight or flight stress hormones, it can cause the following symptoms:
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Churning stomach
Heart palpitations
Muscle tension
Chest pain
Difficulty breathing
Dizziness
Sweats
None of the above symptoms make for a pleasant experience, especially not when they are combined with other non-physical symptoms. The emotional symptoms of a phobia include:
Feelings of dread
Feelings of anxiety
Panic attacks
Fear or detachment
Wanting to escape
At worst, you may even feel as if you are going to die
